Embassy stationery box

Here I try to capture different aspects of the object by focusing on lines and edges.

Below is a representation of the many lines that I observe on the top surface of the box and I am intrigued by the different ways they interact, the ordered parallel lines and the intertwining borders around them, the many different fonts and shapes that make up the lettering on the box and the juxtaposing jumble and order of the design.

I decide to use black brush pen on white A4 paper to record this and attempt to show the areas of faded print with closely packed horizontal lines:

Here I used both black brush pen and 2B pencil on the same A4 paper to more accurately record these lines and the design printed on the surface of the box:

Here I am interested in the the way the way the lines of the product and brand name are seen in perspective and how to try to capture this in a drawing:

Here I look in detail at some contrasting patterns from the top surface of the box, using black brush pen:

Here I took my time to capture in detail the intricate pattern (Indian influenced?) that appears around the sides of the stationery box:

Below, I used continuous line with the end of the 5B graphite stick, on A2 cartridge paper to give me the freedom of movement of my arm that I needed, to quickly capture a suggestion of the designs around the sides of the box:

For this drawing, using a 5B graphite stick and a sheet of A2 cartridge paper, in order to use the texture of the paper, I concentrate on a view of the corner of the box and the intersecting lines I see there, as well as suggesting the area where there is some discolouration from use and age:

In the above drawing, and the below, I used both the end and the side of the graphite stick to make sharp and soft markings, which I felt were appropriate to the object, the way it has lasted in such good condition, but still shows signs of wear and use.

This was an attempt to capture the overall feel of the box's structure and an impression of the designs on three of its faces, rather than the intricate detail:

Here I again used the same graphite stick, but broken to a shorter length and held to use the long edge to produce a thicker line, that is more of a hint of the design, rather than too literal a study of it:

Here, in this large scale drawing with graphite stick, I focus on one small area of the surface design and scale it up. This was quickly drawn, using the freedom of movement of a sheet of A2 paper:

Here, I let my long-held fascination with lettering guide my choice of subject matter, and I focus on some of the words and letters as they appear on the box, scaling them up to many times life size and using repeated strokes of the graphite stick to capture their style and evocative nature:

This is an attempt to use my left hand to draw the top surface of the box and some of the lines that appear on it using A4 paper and 6B pencil:

Here I return to the edges and angles I see at the corner of the box and the linear patterns present there:
